I have moved from the iPhone 17 Pro Max to the iPhone 18 Pro Max. The reviews talk about the camera, the titanium, the smaller Dynamic Island. Nobody talks about the part that turns a €1,300 brick into a phone: the modem. On the 17 Pro / Pro Max that silicon — Qualcomm Snapdragon X80 — was a defect. I documented it, I filed a claim, and I have a lawsuit pending against Apple. Outside the United States, the 18 Pro Max finally ships with the Apple C2. And that, for anyone whose life runs through a phone, is not a spec-sheet asterisk. It is the product.
A phone that does not recover the network after a tunnel is not a flagship. It is an expensive MP3 player with notifications. The rest — brightness, vapor chamber, battery, A20 Pro — matters. The modem decides whether you exist for the world.
1. Nobody talks about the modem. The modem is the phone
Apple sells video capture, Photographic Styles and a one-hour keynote. The user is actually buying a cellular radio that has to register, page, deliver SMS, hold a call and come back to the network when you leave a basement. That is the baseband. If the baseband enters an inconsistent state, the 48 MP sensor is irrelevant. Nobody calls you. You cannot call. WhatsApp waits. The toll is not paid. The client goes to voicemail.
I run a company. I drive nearly 140,000 km a year. Underground parking, A‑7 tunnels, industrial halls with no indoor coverage, hotel Wi‑Fi that dies mid-call. The modem is not an accessory. It is the irreducible function. Everything else is luxury stacked on top of that function.
That is why this is not an unboxing. It is the contrast between a product that failed at its only obligation and the one that, at least outside the US, finally carries Apple silicon in the radio. And it is also the epitaph of fifteen years of Tim Cook: margin for the investor, a defective modem for the user, and zero innovation on top of what was already invented.
2. The iPhone 17 Pro Max: Qualcomm X80 in an inconsistent state
The tunnel cycle
I laid it out in August. Summary, no ornaments:
- The phone is on 5G Auto.
- You enter a no-signal zone: basement, parking garage, tunnel.
- It correctly shows No Service.
- You exit into known, good coverage.
- It does not recover the network. Ever. It only comes back if you toggle Airplane Mode: a manual baseband reset.
In Field Test the handset sometimes looks attached to LTE, with reasonable RSRP, and still does not ring. The caller hears ringback. You see nothing. No missed call until you reset the modem. That is not «bad coverage». That is an inconsistent state: registered and unreachable. A paging failure. A zombie phone with an antenna icon.
I lived it on a 17 Pro and a 17 Pro Max bought in October 2025 at an Apple Store in the Region of Murcia. Replacement unit: the same behaviour. Several carriers (Movistar, Orange, Digi). iOS reinstall. Reset network. Force LTE. The pattern returned. Apple did not fix it in software. Executive Relations sent it back to the support that had already failed. The OMIC in Monforte del Cid reached no agreement. Verbal-trial claim in Alicante: lack of conformity under Spanish consumer law. The file is still open.
Wi‑Fi Calling that kills the call
The other symptom, just as serious and less photographed: the transition from Wi‑Fi calling to cellular. You leave the hotel, Wi‑Fi drops, the baseband has to hand the session to LTE/5G. On a healthy modem that is a handover. On the 17's X80, it was often a cut. The call dropped. The other party heard silence. You still had the handset to your ear on a device that was no longer a phone.
Tunnel, basement, garage, Wi‑Fi handover. Same silicon, same firmware, same contempt for the edge case that anyone who works lives ten times a week. Apple treated it as «design». A phone that does not recover the network in normal use is not a design. It is a defect.
It was not an isolated case. The MacRumors thread has carried the same cycle since December 2025: dead zone → No Service → no recovery → Airplane Mode. Valladolid, Japan, T‑Mobile, AT&T. Technical guides distinguish it from the launch VPN bug. Apple never shipped a fix. The X80 stayed.
3. The lawsuit is not a whim
A flagship that costs more than a thousand euros has one essential obligation: telephony. If the manufacturer holds that a baseband which goes mute after a tunnel is «consistent with the product's design», the consumer is left with no remedy except the economic one. That is why there is a case. That is why there is certified video. That is why I do not close this with a tweet.

Here one sentence is enough: Apple sold an iPhone 17 Pro / Pro Max whose Qualcomm modem did not recover the network, and did not fix it. The 18 Pro Max is the first time that, for anyone buying outside the United States, that silicon is no longer inevitable.
4. The 18 Pro Max outside the US: Apple C2
C2 versus X80
The iPhone 18 Pro ships Apple C2 worldwide. The iPhone 18 Pro Max does too — except in the United States. Apple's spec sheets give it away: in the US the Pro lists «Apple C2 cellular modem» and the Pro Max leaves the line blank. In the UK, Canada, India, France, the UAE, both columns say C2. On 18 and 19 September, TechInsights opened a US A3473 and found the same Qualcomm Snapdragon X80 (SDX80M) from the 17 Pro / Pro Max, with the SDR875 transceiver. 9to5Mac, AppleInsider, iFixit confirm it.
In other words: the 2026 American Pro Max recycles the baseband I was litigating over. The European Pro Max, the one I use now, carries C2. Apple has not explained the asterisk. The usual rumour is the Qualcomm supply deal through 2026. The reason does not matter. The fact is that outside the US there is finally an Apple modem in the largest phone.
Apple credits the C2 with «AI-powered» cellular quality and reliability, faster uploads than the C1X and 15% less energy. It is the first in-house modem with mmWave. Limit Precise Location (iOS 26.3) exists only on Apple silicon: Qualcomm does not implement it. That is not camera marketing. That is control of the baseband.
5. What changes when the baseband stops being a patient
I have felt it in the first days with the 18 Pro Max (C2). I leave the garage. The bars come back. I do not have to do the Airplane Mode dance. A call that starts on Wi‑Fi and continues on the street does not die by default. I will not pretend a thousand hours of Field Test in one week. I will say what a user who spent a year resetting the modem feels in the body: the phone is a phone again.
That is what nobody puts in the 4,000-word review. The American reviewer's Pro Max unit, if it is an A3473, still has the X80. The European unit does not. Mixing both into a global verdict is a trap. The modem is not «the same iPhone 18 Pro Max». There are two radios under one commercial name.
Anyone who buys a Pro Max in the US this September is buying, in the part that matters, a 17 with a new shell. Anyone who buys it here is not.
6. Cooling, display, battery: the rest has matured too
Vapor chamber
iFixit describes a serious vapor chamber, the SoC relocated, an aluminium unibody that actually sheds heat. Gizmodo, in real use, could not get the 18 Pro hot on tasks that already stung last year. Geekerwan measured less power for the same game and a higher thermal ceiling. I feel it in the pocket and in the car: the 17 Pro Max, with the X80 working and the A19 Pro holding on, was a disguised stove. This one is not.
A modem that does not recover and a chassis that runs hot are the same family of problems: silicon that is not at peace with the system. The more efficient C2 and the larger vapor chamber belong together. That is not a coincidence.
Display and battery
The display, under the Alicante sun, is different. More sustained brightness. The 17 was already good. This one is readable on the quayside at noon without the visor gesture. That is a product detail. It is not the product.
Battery: Apple claims up to 45 hours of video on the 18 Pro Max, six more than the 17 Pro Max. iFixit measured 21.75 Wh (5,567 mAh) in the eSIM tray. Geekerwan, in its 5G test, almost two hours more than the 17. Gizmodo could not kill it. The C2 draws less on the radio. The A20 Pro draws less on peaks. The whole thing stops being a sprint to the 8 p.m. charger.
Performance: A20 Pro, sustained because there is something to cool it with. For anyone who does not game, that means less thermal throttling when the phone does three things at once — navigation, a call, the camera — which is the real use of someone who works from the car.
7. The American asterisk: the same X80
I repeat the map, because Apple hides it in a blank line:
- iPhone 17 / 17 Pro / 17 Pro Max: Qualcomm X80 worldwide.
- iPhone 18 Pro: Apple C2 worldwide.
- iPhone 18 Pro Max outside the US: Apple C2.
- iPhone 18 Pro Max in the US (A3473): Qualcomm X80. The one in my lawsuit.
John Gruber wrote it before launch: C2 in every worldwide model with one notable exception, the Pro Max sold in the United States. TechInsights opened it. iFixit photographed it with the Qualcomm logo still on the die. «Probably the last iPhone with a Qualcomm chip,» they say. I hope so. Meanwhile millions of Americans pay the Pro Max price and get the baseband from the year of the defect.
If you have a 17 Pro Max in the US and jump to a local 18 Pro Max, you have not changed modem. You have changed the shell. The tunnel cycle can still be there. The Wi‑Fi Calling handover too. That is not an opinion. That is the same SDX80M.
8. Tim Cook: numbers for Excel, zeros for the product
Fifteen years. The stock, from about $350 billion to four trillion. Services, more than $100 billion. Analysts hand him a crown. I hand him the 17's modem and a list of industrial corpses. Tim Cook has been a disaster for Apple as a product company. A brilliant operator for Excel. A desert for anyone who expects an iPhone to be a phone.
Zero innovation. Iteration of camera, hinge, brightness. The same phone with another number. Record profit does not prove genius. It proves he inherited the iPhone, the App Store and a brand that sells itself, and spent the decade extracting margin. I am sure that with an innovator at the top — someone who bets on product, not quarterly guidance — it would have gone much further. The revenue chart is not the ceiling. It is the floor he was given, and Cook refused to build on it.
The failures are not rumours. They are the CV:
- Apple Car. Years of project, thousands of engineers, cancelled. Huawei and Xiaomi sell cars. Apple sells press releases.
- Vision Pro. A technical marvel that nobody buys. In the App Store there is no ecosystem: demos, ports and silence. Hardware that costs thousands of dollars with an empty shelf. That is not the future. It is a prototype sold as a product.
- Wearables. The Watch has had a decade of annual ticks. Vision Pro was the «spatial» leap and it crashed. No new category took under Cook beyond squeezing AirPods. A general failure dressed up as health and fitness in a keynote.
And on top of that, the treatment: a Qualcomm modem that leaves you unreachable, support that tells you it is «design», and a $100 billion services machine that feeds on friction. Honestly, a bastard. Not for being rich. For turning Apple into a press that extracts from a product he no longer defends, and for leaving as executive chairman as if the 17's X80 and the empty Vision Pro were footnotes.
A rising share price does not absolve him. A shopkeeper can raise prices in a monopoly and make Forbes. That does not make him an inventor. Cook did not invent the iPhone. He administered it until the modem — the irreducible function — became a defect you have to sue over.
9. Ternus can no longer say he did not know
John Ternus has been CEO since 1 September. He comes from Hardware Engineering. The C2 is exactly the bet a silicon engineer should defend: own baseband, consistent states, less energy, less dependence on a supplier Apple has spent a decade suing and recontracting.
The 17's X80 was not a one-batch accident. It was a generation. Apple had a year to patch the inconsistent state. It did not. Now part of the world is free because the C2 fits in the Pro Max. Part of the world is not, because a contract or a carrier validation left the same Qualcomm in the most expensive phone.
My lawsuit does not evaporate because I changed devices. The defective 17 Pro / Pro Max was sold, used, replaced with identical units, and the fault was never acknowledged. The 18 Pro Max with C2 shows, by contrast, that another baseband was possible. That the 17's «design» was not a law of physics. It was a choice.
