On 2 October Apple declared itself. In writing. The iPhone 18 Pro Max can lose cellular service and become unable to make calls. Software will not revive the units that have already fallen: the handset has to be replaced. They admit it. They replace it for free. And they draw a perimeter: 18 Pro Max only, AT&T only, «a small number». They do not name the chip. The chip is the Qualcomm Snapdragon X80 — the same one in every iPhone 17, 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max on the planet, including mine. They declare it where it protects the launch. On the 17 they still hide it, with the existence already proven.
This is not a leak. It is a statement to MacRumors and CNET. Two weeks after putting the most expensive phone in the lineup on sale, Apple has had to say out loud what it has spent a year denying on the 17: there are units whose baseband goes mute and does not come back.
1. What Apple said, word for word
The full statement, 2 October 2026:
We have identified an issue affecting a small number of iPhone 18 Pro Max users on the AT&T network that may cause a device to lose service and be unable to make calls. We released iOS 27.0.1 earlier this week and strongly encourage all iPhone 18 Pro Max users to update now, and are also issuing a carrier settings update today. These updates together are meant to help prevent this issue from occurring.
Three sentences. Three limits. «A small number». 18 Pro Max only. AT&T only. iOS 27.0.1 and a carrier-settings patch «to help prevent» it from occurring. And the sentence that does not fit in the statement and does fit in the remarks to the press: already-affected phones do not get service back with an update. The hardware has to be replaced. Apple does it for free. That includes being unable to call 911.
MacRumors estimates thousands of complaints across the Apple Support Community, Reddit and forums. AT&T sent texts asking customers to update «immediately». Apple insists: it has not observed the problem on other models or other carriers. It does not disclose the cause.
That silence on the cause is not technical. It is the perimeter.
2. The chip they do not name
The iPhone 18 Pro ships Apple C2 worldwide. The 18 Pro Max does too — except in the United States. I wrote that on 21 September, the day after TechInsights opened a US A3473 and found the same Qualcomm Snapdragon X80 (SDX80M) from the 17 Pro / Pro Max, with the SDR875 transceiver. Apple's spec sheets give it away: in the US the Pro lists «Apple C2 cellular modem» and the Pro Max leaves the line blank. In the UK, Canada, India, France, both columns say C2.
The count, again, because it now matters:
- iPhone 17 / 17 Pro / 17 Pro Max: Qualcomm X80 worldwide.
- iPhone 18 Pro: Apple C2 worldwide — including on AT&T.
- iPhone 18 Pro Max outside the US: Apple C2. Mine.
- iPhone 18 Pro Max in the US (A3473): Qualcomm X80. The one in the statement.
CNET says it in passing and should not have to: an 18 Pro on AT&T does not see the fault. An 18 Pro Max on Google Fi (T‑Mobile's network) does not either. The only 2026 flagship still carrying last year's baseband is the American 18 Pro Max. That is the one Apple has just declared. The 18 Pro, with C2, sits outside the perimeter. The 17, with the same X80, does too.
Apple has not written «Qualcomm». It does not have to. The September teardown already did. Declaring the symptom and hiding the silicon is the same operation as always: admit the minimum that covers the launch, deny what would open an entire generation.
3. The 17 already had it. I documented it. It is still in the file
In August I described the cycle, no ornaments:
- The phone is on 5G Auto.
- You enter a dead zone: basement, car park, tunnel.
- It correctly shows No Service.
- You come out into known, good coverage.
- It does not recover the network. It only comes back if you toggle Airplane Mode: a manual baseband reset.
In Field Test it sometimes looks attached to LTE, with reasonable RSRP, and still does not ring. The caller hears ringback. You see nothing. No missed call until you reset the modem. Inconsistent state: registered and unreachable. A zombie phone with an antenna icon. The other symptom: the Wi‑Fi calling to cellular handover that kills the call when you leave the hotel.
I lived it on a 17 Pro and a 17 Pro Max bought in October 2025 at an Apple Store in the Murcia region. Replacement unit: the same behaviour. Movistar, Orange, Digi. iOS reinstall. Reset network. Force LTE. The pattern returned. Executive Relations forwarded it to the support that had already failed. The OMIC in Monforte del Cid reached no agreement. A verbal civil claim in Alicante. The file is still open.
It was not an isolated case. The MacRumors thread has carried the same cycle since December 2025. Valladolid on Movistar. Japan on docomo. T‑Mobile. AT&T. Technical guides distinguish it from the launch VPN bug. Apple never shipped a fix. The X80 stayed. For a year the answer was «design», «coverage», «try another SIM».
Now the same silicon, in a new shell, on the carrier that already appeared in the 17 reports, leaves the phone unable to place a call. And suddenly it is an «issue identified». Suddenly there is a free replacement. Suddenly software is not enough and the brick has to be swapped.
4. Why they declare it on the 18 and stay silent on the 17
There is no need to attribute malice. Looking at the incentives is enough.
The American 18 Pro Max has been on the street for two weeks. Thousands of complaints, 911, carrier SMS, journalists with review units. A flagship that cannot call on the number-two network in the United States is not covered by a Genius Bar and a smile. You issue a statement, you cut a perimeter, and you swap units before the iPhone Duo and the October event eat the news cycle.
The 17 has been sold for a year. Admitting that this generation's X80 enters a state the firmware cannot leave — or leaves only with a user reset — opens warranty, consumer law, mediation, individual claims and, in the US, the ghost of a class action. Apple has spent twelve months treating that symptom as design. A statement that named the 17 would turn AT&T's «small number» into a generation.
That is why the most important sentence is not the one that admits the 18. It is this: No other iPhone models or carriers are known to be impacted. «Known» is the adverb of someone who has not wanted to look. The 17 Pro in Murcia, the Pro Max in Valladolid, the one in Japan on docomo, the T‑Mobile units, the AT&T units in the 2025 thread: they existed before the A3473 left the box. They are in my articles. They are in the forums. Apple declares them non-existent on the same day it replaces the new SKU.
There is a difference in severity that should not be blurred. On the 17 the workaround is Airplane Mode: the baseband goes zombie and a reset wakes it, until the next tunnel. On the AT&T 18 Pro Max, according to Apple, software cannot reactivate the units that have already fallen. That is harder. It may be a more destructive failure mode — some talk of RF over-driving an AT&T band — or the same inconsistent state taken to a point of no return. I do not have an A3473 on the desk. I have the pattern: same modem, same essential function broken, same refusal to treat it as a generation defect.
If iOS 27.0.1 does not resurrect a muted 18 Pro Max, why would iOS 26.x resurrect a 17? Apple is not trying. It is cutting.
5. Two radios, one commercial name, one silence
Anyone who reads the global 18 Pro Max reviews without looking at the SKU is mixing two phones. The European, the Canadian, the one in Dubai, mine: C2. You leave the car park and the bars come back. The American: X80. That is the one Apple has just declared, and the one that, if it has already fallen, gets swapped whole.
That does not absolve the 17. The 17 has no C2 in any country. The 17 is X80 end to end. The silence on that generation is not a lab conclusion. It is a product and litigation decision.
John Ternus has been CEO for a month. He inherited the X80, the Qualcomm deal through 2026, and a 17 that was sold as a flagship with a baseband that does not recover. The 2 October statement is his first public test: you can admit a dead modem if the cut fits in one SKU and one carrier. The rest, to design.
6. If you have a 17 — or an American 18 Pro Max
If you have an iPhone 18 Pro Max bought in the United States, on AT&T, and you have lost service: do not wait for 27.0.1 to give it back. Apple has said it cannot. Ask for the replacement. Document it. 911 is not a luxury.
If you have an iPhone 17, 17 Pro or 17 Pro Max — in Spain, in Italy, in Japan, on T‑Mobile, on AT&T — and after a tunnel, a basement or a car park the phone does not recover until Airplane Mode, or incoming calls ring at the other end and never on yours: you are not an isolated case Apple «has not observed». You are the generation they left out of the statement. The silicon is the same. The broken function is the same. The existence is in the August article, the September one, and a thread that is ten months old.
Document before you write: video of another line calling, Field Test, carrier, iOS version, whether you asked for a swap. Do not delete support emails. In Spain, consumer mediation; then civil if needed. My file is still open. Each correlated case counts more than a tweet.
Send me your case through the contact form — put «iPhone 17 modem» or «iPhone 18 Pro Max X80». Model, carrier, country, iOS. I am not a law firm. I am the person who has spent a year with the same chip Apple has just admitted on the new phone, and still will not admit on the 2025 one.
